Situated on a shady street just off Paseo Colón, San José's main thoroughfare, Hotel Grano de Oro is a true oasis, a sanctuary in the heart of the city. Converted from a Tropical Victorian mansion, the 35-room hotel maintains the warmth and comfort of a private home. Hallways lined with period photographs and original art meander through the building and present lush tropical flower arrangements and luxuriant plants at every turn. Italian tile fountains grace intimate atriums, ensuring that one is never far from the soothing melody of falling water. The gardens at Grano de Oro are both inside and out. A rooftop terrace offers relaxing Jacuzzis and a spot for secluded sunbathing and stargazing. Service is paramount and the perpetually smiling staff of the Grano de Oro welcomes guests home time and time again.

Rooms & Suites

Hotel Grano de Oro features thirty-two rooms in three categories as well as three signature suites.
All rooms are furnished in Tropical Victorian styles with wrought-iron beds and rich damask fabrics in three jeweled color schemes - navy, burgundy and forest-green. The art and furnishings are handcrafted by Costa Rican artists. No two rooms are alike. Private baths are blue and white Italian tile adorned with gleaming base fixtures. All rooms are designated as smoke-free, with smoking permitted in the restaurant, gardens and common areas.

Location

Hotel Grano de Oro occupies a quiet street in the nation's capital of San José, close to the vibrant city center and numerous restaurants, theaters and shops.

San José boasts a blend of modern and classic architecture. Notable among the latter is the spectacular National Theater of colonial vintage. San Jose is the home of several fine universities and museums. Itineraries should include the Jade Museum, which houses the largest jade collection in the Americans; the National Museum of history; the Gold Museum with its pre-Colombian treasures; and the Children's Museum, situated in a former penitentiary. A thriving Central Market, parks and pedestrian malls add to a visitor's enjoyment.

Just 20 minutes from the International Airport, San José rises 3770 feet above sea level. It shares an ideal climate with the rest of the Central Valley, averaging daytime temperatures of 75 F. The rainy season (or green season, as Costa Ricans prefer), begins in May and lasts until late October. During the day, sunny skies prevail until afternoon showers quench the vegetation for a few hours and freshen the air. The rest of the year generally brings hot clear days, and cool fresh evenings.

Restaurant

Restaurante Grano de Oro merges Costa Rican tropical with European cuisine under the expertise of French-trained Chef Francis Canal. Once a simple café, this restaurant has evolved into one of San Jose's finest dining establishments, frequented by locals and tourists alike. Specialty cocktails, classically presented dishes and delicious desserts are served in the charming ambiance of an intimate dining room, an adjacent sunroom and the tropical courtyard. Friendly, bilingual waiters serve breakfast from 6:00 a.m, lunch from 11:30 a.m., and dinner from 5:30-10:00 p.m.
