- Garden Lankaster (El Jardin Botanico Lankester)
Located in the province of Cartago, we find the most beautiful garden
of orchids in Costa Rica. It was found in 1940 from the English nature scientist
Charles. The private property of more than 10 hectares shows you 800 different species of
orchids from all parts of the world. Because several species do not grow in the stable
climate in the area of about 68 Fahrenheit, they also built a hothouse. Guided tours of
about 1 hour are offered from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm. You can also walk through the park
without a guide. Best time to visit is from March to May.
- Park Franzisco Alvardo in Zarcero
If your drive from San José to Ciudad Quesada and to La Fortuna, you
will pass the village of Zarcero on the highest point of the mountain (about 5400 feet).
They have a pretty and famous park that got built in 1960. In front of the church, you see
flowers and bushes, which have been formed like animals. There is also a fountain.
- Parque Sabana Grande
This park in the west part of San José is the most popular for the
Costaricans.
There are several bicicle and hiking trails, some football places and a lake with a
fountian. Different trees can be seen, for example mahagoni and milk trees. At the
entrance, there is a bronce statue of a former president.
- Parque Nacional
This small park is located in the north east part of downtown San
José. It has the "Monumento Nacional", a bronce statue, which reminds on the
battle of 1856.
An ideal place for a short break in the shadow during a walk through the city.
- Parque Espana
Another small park, also located in the north east of San José. There
is much bamboo and the statue "El Conquistador", which reminds on the taking
over by the Spaniards. There is a small pretty chapel in the north east of the park.
- Parque Morazan
is located west of Parque Espana and one of the youngest parks in the
city.
It was named after Franzisco Morazan Quesada, a president of the 19th century.
In it´s center, there is a column building, where music concerts are held on
sunday afternoons. The park offers not much shadow.
- Parque Central
Oldest park of San José, located near the "Cathedral
Metropolitana". Lost importance today.
