Tax aspects

Neither the "Rentista" nor the "Pensionado" have to pay taxes, except on certain service like garbage collection or property tax. Income from abroad does not need to be paid. You also do not have to pay tax if you make money with selling and buying houses, as long as it has private character. Also taxes an saving interest is unknown. And you can transfer money in and out of the country without restrictions.
   However, you have to pay tax on all incomes gained in Costa Rica, no matter where the come from. Every person living in Costa Rica for longer than 6 months per years, counts as a resident under the tax law and has to fill out declarations.
   There is a 13 percent sales tax on all bills like for example in restaurants, car garages or dry cleaning. Many products, especially simple food like rice and sugar, has a tax excemption. In general, one can say that taxes are low in Costa Rica.
